A property insurance claim

What is an insured event?

An insured event is an occurrence provided for by the insurance contract, upon the occurrence of which the insurer becomes obliged to make an insurance payment to the policyholder or the beneficiary.

The mere fact of property damage does not automatically mean that the event is an insured event.

It is necessary to establish the compliance of what happened with the terms of the contract.

What to do first?

When an event occurs, it is necessary to:

  • take reasonable measures to prevent further damage;
  • ensure the safety of people;
  • if necessary, call the relevant emergency or competent services;
  • record the circumstances of what happened;
  • notify the insurance company;
  • keep documents and materials confirming the event;
  • not proceed with significant elimination of consequences without agreement with the insurer, if this may affect the establishment of the circumstances of the event.

In case of fire

It is necessary to contact the relevant emergency services and obtain documents confirming the fact of the fire and its circumstances.

After that, it is necessary to notify the insurance company.

In case of theft or robbery

It is necessary to contact law enforcement agencies, record the occurrence, and keep documents related to the investigation.

After that, it is necessary to notify the insurer of the event.

In case of water damage

It is necessary, if possible, to stop the source of damage and take measures to prevent an increase in damage.

At the same time, it is important to keep evidence of the cause of the damage.

In case of other damage

It is necessary to record the condition of the property, the circumstances of the occurrence, and notify the insurer in the manner established by the contract.

What to prepare for the insurance company?

Depending on the situation, the following may be required:

  • insurance policy;
  • application;
  • documents about the occurrence;
  • photographs and video recordings;
  • documents from competent authorities;
  • documents on the value or amount of damage;
  • other documents provided for by the contract.

Should the insurer be notified immediately?
Yes. The notification must be sent in the manner and within the time limits established by the insurance contract.

Can repairs be started independently?
Before agreement with the insurer, it is advisable to preserve the condition of the damaged property, if this is possible and safe.

What to do in case of theft?
Contact law enforcement agencies, record the occurrence, and notify the insurance company.

What to do in case of fire?
Call the relevant services, ensure safety, record the consequences, and notify the insurer.

Will there be payment for any property damage?
No. The event must correspond to the insured risk and the terms of the contract.
